The characteristics of 11% to 14% Mn Hadfield Steel
  • Work hardening steel - the more impact and abrasion it gets the harder the surface becomes.
  • Steel stays ductile underneath - as the surface wears - only outer layer gets hard.
  • With continued impact the manganese steel can harden to 63 Rockwell C scale or 668 Brinell.
  • When rolled - never brittle.
  • Work hardened surface is almost friction-less.
  • Non-Magnetic
  • Quenched, annealed and austenitic
  • Can be cut by plasma / laser / water jet / oxy-acetylene
  • Made to ASTM A128 standards
  • Tensile strength - 120,000/130,000 psi
  • Yield strength - 60,000/85,000 psi
  • % Elongation in 2" - 35%/50%

Chemical composition
  • Mn 11.0/14.0
  • C 1.0/1.3
